All I can say, is that... It was horrible.
I just got back. Overslept in the bus and went to Tampines Interchange so I thought, why not stop by McDonalds so I can pig out and temporarily put an end to my sufferings? Anyway, CSB went to TKGS today for the band exchange program. There were two other schools besides Cedar and TKG, and they were Fairfield and St Nicholas' Girls. Fairfield went first. To give you my honest opinion, without any niceties, I have to say that Fairfield were quite good. The song they chose was entertaining. It sounds a bit like Ascentium. But their flaws, just like all other 3 schools (that includes Cedar), is that sometimes you can hear someone squeak their instrument. When clarinetists squeak, it sounds more obvious, I think.. Oh, but I don't know if there was anyone from Cedar who squeaked, though, because when I'm playing, I can only concentrate either on the cymbals or the temple block. Then it was St. Nicholas' Girls. Again, to be honest, I think that the song they chose was a bit boring at some parts, of course. But then, to be fair, all the other schools' chosen songs were kind of a bit boring at some parts. Then it was TKGS. The song they chose was kinda creepy. Kind of like The Addams Family theme song.. But they played really well. I noticed their clarinetists were quite pro. I mean, they had to play many many notes in one go.. Uhh. Sorry, I can't really explain it. Then was Cedar! It was obvious that they cymbals were totally out lah. Ms Sia was looking at me, giving me the evil eye and everything, but I couldn't do anything! I was so nervous, my whole body was shaking, and I couldn't seem to concentrate on when I was supposed to hit the cymbals.. )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))): It was horrible. After I played it, I knew everyone in the audience would be thinking, Wow, what a horrible cymbal player. Can't even follow the conductor properly. I really felt like taking the triangle stick in my hands and sticking it into my throat or something. Just wanted to stick it somewhere so I could end my pain by committing suicide. Then, all the schools combined for sectionals. As in, all the percussionists stuck together to practise Sunrise, our set piece. Oh yeah, one of the schools glockenspiel players (I can't remember which one) was also totally out. As out as I was on the cymbals. Idiot me. Anyway, I had to go combine with the other cymbal players, who were Elaine (from TKGS) and Christine (from St. Nicholas' Girls). Dunno why, but the player from Fairfield never came. Probably a guy, cos all the percussionists from Fairfield were guys, except for two girls. Elaine taught me a lot of stuff. I now know how many sets I'm supposed to play.
And then all the schools played once more. And you know what? Although I knew how many sets I was supposed to play, I messed up again. Ms Sia was giving me the 'I'm irritated' face and I knew it. I totally forgot to look at her, which is the whole point, so that I won't go out of timing!!!! I'm such an idiot, I don't know what to say to myself. When we were packing up, I walked past Ms Sia and I heard her saying a couple of words, but I couldn't hear the whole sentence; along the lines of 'cymbal player, the sec 2 girl...' She probably meant 'I'm going to change the cymbal player for Cedar, that sec 2 girl can't count!' Oh gawd. She 'll probably be coming this Thursday, so I have 5 days including today to either buck up or resign myself to getting pulverized by her on Thur. But I think I prefer the former. Only, how to practise? I don't have a metronome.. We had to get out of the school before the security guard closed the gate, so I couldn't ask Ci Hui if I could borrow one home.. Nevermind, I'll borrow on Tue. That is, if I'm still the cymbal player by the end of Tue band prac.
Ugh. I'm so pessimistic. But when you've heard Ms Sia herself saying that she's going to change you or hopefully, only check on you (checking is also bad. But it also means that she's giving you another chance, right? Notice the positive approach.), you would feel like the end of the world was coming too..... I can always play when Ms Sia isn't around. Really!
Cos, I mean, I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY want to play for SYF this year. It would mean so, so much. I know, I can't just speak but not DO. I have to practise! Practise makes perfect. Yes, I will practise and work hard and not give her a chance to cut me ad kick me out of SYF.
